Evaluating Bicyclists Comfort and Safety Perception

چکیده
Perception of safety and comfort of bicycle infrastructure is an important factor influencing the use of bicycles. Cyclists can be found all over India. In urban areas presently, mostly captive riders choose to bicycle as no other viable options of travel are available to them. This study discusses perceptions of these captive riders as compared to a group of not yet riding (potential) cyclists. A stated preference survey to estimate the perception of captive users and potential users on cycling was conducted. The perception of risk among captive riders and potential riders does not show much difference as against popular beliefs. Both the captive users as well as the potential users focus on physical safety and the difficulties in crossing the intersections. Differences arise in perception of comfort / attractiveness and barriers. Pedestrians / bus commuters waiting at the curb side lane are considered as predominant barriers (about 28%) by potential users while captive riders are more tolerant to them. Results indicate that perception of safety and comfort are not related to age, gender, type of zone and distance travelled. However, the presence of informal sector on the street side is social security element and attractive for providing services for captive cyclists. The potential users consider informal sector as a barrier, although, lighting seems to be important to them. Results of SP experiment shows potential users perceive slope as bigger threat to bicycle compatibility as compared to captive riders. Captive riders prefer wider roads against the narrow roads preferred by potential cyclists. Land use mix seems to be not a major concern, while low density areas are preferred. The results can be used for evaluating area bicycle compatibility both for captive and potential users.

Evaluating the Effectiveness of Daylight Performance Metrics in Predicting Visual Comfort Case Study: Educational Architecture Design Studios in Tehran
It is essential to ensure that adequate daylight penetrates in, especially, educational environments. In spite of positive significant impacts of daylight on the emotions, concentration, and learning of students, an exceeded amount of light will lead to glare and visual dissatisfaction. Over the last few years, with the help of simulation tools and lighting indices, it is possible to predict li...
متن کاملEvaluation of Motorcycle Conspicuity in a Car Drl Environment
Daytime Running Lights (DRL) on motorcycles have been shown to counteract the inherently lower sensory conspicuity of these vehicles and to significantly improve their safety. The advantage of the use of DRL exclusively by motorcycles is presently becoming lost by the increasing use of DRLs on cars. The present experiment aimed at evaluating the effects of car DRLs on motorcycle perception in a...
متن کاملTraffic Calming Benefits, Costs and Equity Impacts
This paper describes a framework for evaluating traffic calming programs. Potential benefits include road safety, increased comfort and mobility for non-motorized travel, reduced environmental impacts, increased neighborhood interaction, and increased property values. Traffic calming can help create more livable communities and reduce suburban sprawl. Traffic calming costs can include project e...
متن کاملWhat is at the end of the road? Understanding discontinuities of on-street bicycle lanes in urban settings
Demarcating on-street bicycle facilities is oftenmentioned as an important strategy to encourage increased bicycle safety and bicycle travel. However, little if any literature has focused on instances where separate onstreet bicycle facilities end. This paper better understands the severity of such instances and corresponding physical characteristics. We identify 30 discontinuities of on-street...
متن کامل“Bicycles May Use Full Lane” Signage Communicates U.S. Roadway Rules and Increases Perception of Safety
Many global challenges, including obesity, health care costs, and climate change, could be addressed in part by increasing the use of bicycles for transportation. Concern about the safety of bicycling on roadways is frequently cited as a deterrent to increasing bicycle use in the USA. The use of effective signage along roadways might help alleviate these concerns by increasing knowledge about t...
